One of the biggest impediments to adoption of new technologies is trust in AI.

Now, a new tool developed by USC Viterbi Engineering researchers generates automatic indicators if data and predictions generated by AI algorithms are trustworthy.  Their research paper, "There Is Hope After All: Quantifying Opinion and Trustworthiness in Neural Networks" by Mingxi Cheng, Shahin Nazarian and Paul Bogdan of the USC Cyber Physical Systems Group, was featured in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.

Forests such as the Amazon rainforest emit huge amounts of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) into the atmosphere. These compounds impact the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere and also our climate. The molecules react rapidly with ambient OH radicals and ozone, thereby influencing the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere for pollutants such as carbon monoxide and greenhouse gases such as methane. Furthermore, BVOC are precursors to secondary organic aerosols, which affect the Earth's radiative budget.

It is the second greenhouse gas with even a global warming potential larger than CO2. An international study realized in the framework of the Global Carbon Project provides updated information and data on its increasing concentrations in the atmosphere. Scientists of the School of Natural Sciences of Far Eastern Federal University (SNS FEFU) with colleagues from Russia, South Korea, and Australia suggest the breaking new ground approach to manage spin-electronic properties and functionality of the thin-film magnetic nanosystems. A drug used to treat gout, probenecid, may improve heart function in individuals with a particular heart defect, according to results from a small pilot study run by a University of Cincinnati researcher.

Jack Rubinstein, MD, associate professor in the UC College of Medicine and UC Health cardiologist, conducted a randomized double-blind trial which included eight participants who had palliative surgery to correct a condition of the heart known as congenital univentricular circulation. Each participant received probenecid or a placebo during a 12-week period.

When the body can no longer compensate the gradual failure of the liver caused by liver cirrhosis, there is a high risk of acute decompensated liver cirrhosis. In some patients this develops quickly into an often deadly acute-on-chronic liver failure, in which other organs such as the kidneys or brain fail. A study by an international team of researchers headed by Professor Jonel Trebicka from the Frankfurt University Hospital and funded by the foundation EF Clif, has discovered which patients are particularly at risk.

Many NASA assets were used to provide forecasters with information to incorporate into their analysis of Hurricane Laura. Satellite imagery, photographs from the International Space Station, and a computer program that produces animations of imagery are all things that NASA used to analyze the storm. NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite also caught a nighttime image of Laura just after landfall.

Global warming is dramatically increasing the risk of extreme hurricanes in the Caribbean, but meeting more ambitious climate change goals could up to halve the likelihood of such disasters in the region, according to new research.

The study, led by the University of Bristol, analysed future projections of hurricane rainfall in the Caribbean and found it to be particularly vulnerable to climate change, resulting in extreme hurricane rainfall events being as much as five times more likely in a warmer world.

Researchers working in human cells have identified a new pathway that targets a common vulnerability in several different pandemic viruses. This pathway can protect cells from infection by Ebola virus and from coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2, they say. Their new findings, uncovered by an innovative screening approach, may inform future therapies against a broad range of viruses. Recent and ongoing outbreaks of Ebola virus in Africa and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic globally highlight the need to identify additional treatment strategies for viral infections.

NASA's Terra satellite captured visible imagery as Tropical Storm Bavi made landfall in northwestern North Korea and moved inland.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured a visible image of Tropical Storm Bavi on Aug. 27. The image showed an almost shapeless tropical storm moving over North Korea and into China.

NASA infrared imagery shows that newly formed Tropical Storm Iselle is already battling for its life under wind shear.

Tropical Depression 14E formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean on Aug. 26 by 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC). By 5 p.m. EDT, it strengthened into a tropical storm and was re-named Iselle.

NASA's Infrared Data Finds Push of Winds

Nighttime imagery from NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite revealed the Eastern Pacific Ocean's Tropical Storm Hernan along the coast of western Mexico. By the weekend, Hernan is expected to absorb nearby Tropical Storm Iselle.

Tropical Depression 13E formed by 5 a.m. EDT on Aug. 26 in the Eastern Pacific. Twelve hours later it strengthened to a tropical storm and was renamed Hernan.

By detecting subtle differences in the way that Alzheimer's sufferers use language, researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology have developed an A.I. algorithm that promises to accurately diagnose Alzheimer's without the need for expensive scans or in-person testing. The software not only can diagnose Alzheimer's, at negligible cost, with more than 95 percent accuracy, but is also capable of explaining its conclusions, allowing physicians to double check the accuracy of its diagnosis.

Older adults experienced greater depression and loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study by Indiana University researchers, and relationship strength (perceived closeness to network members) moderated the relationship between loneliness and depression
