Martian global dust storm ended winter early in the south
A dust storm that engulfed Mars in 2018 destroyed a vortex of cold air around the planet's south pole and brought an early spring to the hemisphere. By contrast, the storm caused only minor distortions to the polar vortex in the northern hemisphere and no dramatic seasonal changes.

Meet the Martian meteorite hunters
A team at the Natural History Museum (NHM), London is paving the way for future rovers to search for meteorites on Mars. The scientists are using the NHM's extensive meteorite collection to test the spectral instruments destined for the ExoMars rover Rosalind Franklin, and develop tools to identify meteorites on the surface of the red planet. The project is being presented today (23 July) at the virtual National Astronomy Meeting 2021.

Mayo Clinic research suggests women over 65 be offered hereditary cancer genetic testing
A new study by Fergus Couch, Ph.D., of Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, along with collaborators from the CARRIERS consortium, suggests that most women with breast cancer diagnosed over 65 should be offered hereditary cancer genetic testing. The study was published Thursday, July 22, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Advanced bladder cancers respond to immunotherapy regardless of gene mutation status
UNC Lineberger researchers and colleagues report a study has demonstrated that patients with advanced bladder cancers whose tumors have a mutated FGFR3 gene respond to immunotherapy in a manner that is similar to patients without that mutation. This discovery runs counter to previous research that suggested FGFR3-mutated bladder cancers should not be treated with immunotherapy.

New tests can detect tiny but toxic particles of coal ash in soil
Duke University scientists have developed tests sensitive enough to detect and measure microscopic particles of coal ash in soil, even at concentrations so low and sizes so small that other tests would likely miss them. The four new tests complement tests previously developed at Duke to detect coal ash contamination in water and larger particles of coal ash in soil.

Perfecting collagen production in osteogenesis imperfecta
Mesenchymal stem cells are the origin for osteoblasts, but MSC transplantation has not resulted in long-term success as a treatment option for brittle bone disease. Hematopoietic stem cells usually give rise to blood cells and osteoclasts, but researchers hypothesized that they could give rise to osteoblasts too. By replacing osteoblasts, they offer a potential therapeutic opportunity that is not dependent on a specific mutation but simply on a mutation being present, which gives patients hope.

'Good cholesterol' may protect liver

Cattle losing adaptations to environment, MU researchers find
In a new PLOS Genetics study, researchers have uncovered evidence showing that cattle are losing important environmental adaptations, losses the researchers attribute to a lack of genetic information available to farmers. After examining genetic material stretching back to the 1960s, they identified specific DNA variations associated with adaptations that could one day be used to create DNA tests for cattle -- tests that could tell farmers whether their cattle are suited for one environment or another.

Investigational magnetic device shrinks glioblastoma in first-in-world human test
Houston Methodist Neurological Institute researchers from the department of neurosurgery shrunk a deadly glioblastoma tumor by more than a third using a helmet generating a noninvasive oscillating magnetic field that the patient wore on his head while administering the therapy in his own home. The 53-year-old patient died from an unrelated injury about a month into the treatment, but during that short time, 31% of the tumor mass disappeared. The autopsy of his brain confirmed the rapid response to the treatment.
