An elementary school child who has difficulty reading is likely to have his or her eyesight checked and if the results come back as 20/20, it might be assumed that the eyes aren't the problem. But recent research suggests even kids who make that particular grade may still have an eye-related problem, and different testing procedures are in order.

Antabuse - A Very Good Pill To Stop Drinking, But Don't Cheat

There are good prescription drugs, bad ones, and then there is Antabuse (generic name disulfiram). It is both. It works, but you'd better give it plenty of respect. 

As the name implies, Antabuse is used to prevent alcoholics from drinking. It sure works for that, but so does killing a mosquito by sitting in a room with it, and pulling the pin on a hand grenade. Effective? Yes. Subtle? Not so much. Yet, when subtlety doesn't work you might need the hand grenade. Alcoholism sometimes needs the grenade.

Defibrillator Use Greatly Improves Heart-Attack Survival, Study Reaffirms

When it comes to AEDs and the potential to save lives, the good news keeps on coming.  

We now have more support to show that when a bystander uses a portable defibrillator on someone suffering a heart attack in a public place, chances of survival increase markedly. Another big plus: the stricken patient emerges from hospital care in relatively better physical condition.

Dr. Oz. Dr. Who?

Dr. Oz's show aired it's 1500th episode earlier this month. We didn't notice. We're guessing you didn't either. 

That's because his landmark 1500th show was really a non-event. 

We, like others in the scientific community, have been constant critics of the non-evidence backed "advice" that Dr. Oz has dished out through the years. In fact, a survey done in 2013 by Ranit Mishori, MD, a Professor of Family Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, showed exactly how non-scientific his advice is.
